Stop pitching ‘speeds and feeds’

I wrote a few months back that your product is the least interesting thing about you. I meant it, and I constantly have to remind myself of it.

For years, pitches led with specs. Faster. Cheaper. More features than the others. I thing that was rigor and just better.

It’s not. It’s noise. Reporters don’t cover spec sheets, they cover stories. What changes, for whom and why does it matter? Speeds and fees are the appendix, not the headline.

I stopped leading with what a product does. I start with what breaks if it doesn’t exist. That’s the pitch that gets read past the first line.

Tell a story, not slop.
